Growing Beans, Avocados and Potatoes!

For Inquiry Learning at present, we are learning about 5 + a day!

We have been learning about all the healthy, yummy fruit and vegetables we need to eat to be healthy and strong. We know the names of lots of fruit and vegetables but we didn't really know where they come from. So we decided to grow some vegetables ourselves in our classroom.

Here is some writing Willie did to explain in a PROCEDURAL TEXT how we began growing our beans.

Once we had written about what we had done and wondered about what might happen next as they start to grow, we watched a Youtube Timelapse video of how a bean grows. We watched carefully to see what grew first, then what grew next and then what was the last part of the bean plant to grow. We had to have a think about it and we wondered if our bean plants would grow in the same way. So we wrote about what we think might happen to our beans.
Below, Ocean and Krista wrote what they think may happen, using what they had seen in the Youtube video.
We also planted some Avocado seeds and some Potato seeds in jars with cotton wool and water. We are wondering how these plants will grow.........what do you think will happen first?

Snag Golf!

Shannon from Snag Golf came to do Kiwi Sports with our school today. It was a rainy day so we were lucky to still be able to learn how to play golf inside our Multipurpose room.

The children in Room 4 really enjoyed playing Snag Golf and wrote a recount of what we had to do to be successful in playing this game. Ivan and Zealand used some interesting detail words to help us know how to play it, and how we can get better at it for next time. Read their writing below and see if you can spot the 'learning points' so that you too can get better at Snag Golf.

We look forward to seeing Shannon again next Thursday. If you want to know more about Snag Golf, press on this link and it will take you to their website.

Learning Points from Ivan's writing

  • Throw the ball gently at the target
  • Don't put the golf club up high.

Learning points from Zealand's writing

  • Keep your legs and hands together.
  • Put the ball on the blue tee to make it easier to hit.
  • Face your feet towards the ball.
  • Hit the ball gently.

Ronald McDonald came to visit!

We were very lucky to have a visit from Ronald McDonald. He came to teach us how to be safe when we are in a car or when we are crossing the road.

Room 4 LOVES to sing the songs that Ronald McDonald taught us (we even sing them while we are doing Handwriting sometimes).

Read Shayna's explanation of why Ronald McDonald came to visit.

Here's a link to watch the 'Make it Click' song that Room 4 loves so much. Enjoy!

Use the clues to choose which shoes are whose!

Room 4 has been learning about PAIRS of things in maths. We can count in 2s and decided to count our shoes!

Read Halasika, Cognac and Ocyan's descriptions of their shoes and scroll down to the pictures below to see if you can figure out which shoes belong to each child.

The boys drew their shoes by observing carefully the detail on them. They used pencil first and then coloured them with Jovi crayons. The children spent a long time getting the fine details correct.
All the children in Room 4 drew and described their shoes. They are displayed on the wall outside our classroom if you want to come and see them.

Healthy Fruit Salad

Room 4 was learning about how to keep our bodies healthy. We learnt that eating fruit is helpful in staying healthy.

Read Tulialo and Zealand's recounts of how Room 4 made a healthy fruit salad one Friday afternoon.

The children all had a job to do. They loved trying 6 different kinds of fruit. Yummy!

How far can your paper aeroplane fly?

We made paper aeroplanes and estimated how far they could fly. Then we tested them by throwing and measuring the distance they flew.

The students knew that 1m is the same as 100cm. They used a metre ruler to estimate and measure the distance of their throws.

As you can see, Satui was spot on! Miss Letcher threw her plane the furthest (she has longer arms than the children so it wasn't fair! )

The children learned how to fold the paper aeroplanes, how to throw them, and how to estimate and measure using metres. We had heaps of fun doing all this learning!
